There is ongoing work on #11730 (11730aa) to refactor invalidateCache and refrshBuffers in order to properly integrate with exclusively locked records. There are more details in #11730.
In #11622 there is ongoing discussion, especially in regard to query capability. There is a 11622a that already does plenty of changes to improve integration with FWD persistence layer and a Wiki (Querying_with_Native_SQL and Running_Native_SQL).
