The idea is to write an installer with the following attributes:

  • Native executables for Windows and Linux. I don't know if we need both 32-bit and 64-bit support but we should not exclude 32-bit from the design.
  • Installs a pre-built binary distribution (#4552), optimally included as part of the executable itself.
  • Uses the install checker (#4553) to confirm the envrironment meets HW/SW requirements, has all dependencies...

For Linux, I'm not opposed to implementing using the traditional package approach (e.g. a .deb package which would probably need to be delivered via a custom PPA).

It is a requirement to enable scripted installations using the same core code (optimally also using the same installer executables). The idea is that the installer should be able to be executed in fully unattended mode.
