Today the data import process is well documented, but it contains many manual steps and is thus error prone. This process should be automated as much as possible. It would be nice to have a cross-platform solution, but due to the differences in databases and the nature of the work being close to the platform, we probably will need to use scripts to drive database vendor-specific tools. Need to think on this some more...
First target is PostgreSQL on Linux and Windows, then MS SQL Server on Windows.
